A new kind of pony
is being developed at Bohemian Gypsy Cobs. "BoHo" envisions a
smaller gypsy pony here in the U.S. that reflects the spectacular draft horse
developed by British Romany folk.
Gypsy lifestyle created an efficient yet flashy large draft pony in
the 14 hands tall range to pull the living wagon or "vardo" of the
family. This horse had to be very
sensible, quiet and strong, yet gentle enough to be managed by the mother and
children. BoHo's focus is on the
recreational version that is a little bit smaller but still a sturdy, hairy
legged wonder for pleasure or show. BoHo values
temperament foremost. Gypsy families
would never use an unsafe horse no matter how pretty it was. A creature worth having around has to have
a wonderfully kind and loving nature and high intelligence. A good family pony is very forgiving. Quality is further
defined in the animal by conformation.
Our ponies will be beautifully made with structure that lets them
compete as an athlete (sound minds, sound bodies). Gypsy ponies will
reflect superior breed type, which includes the drafty “proper cob” body
outline, with hair and feather as “frosting on the cake”. The picture of a good gypsy pony will be
equal to the best standard size gypsy cobs; if you have no point of reference
in the picture to show how tall the animal is, you should not be able to say
whether the animal is 12 hands or 15 hands.
Manes and tails will often be double thickness and feather will cover
the hooves both in front and behind, starting from behind the knees and hocks. The genetics for extra hairiness often
makes them have mustaches, beards and other facial hair as well as belly hair
and breeches, especially in cold weather. The British cobs are
known as good workers with solid minds.
They are very forward moving, not lazy and not excitable, but willing
and able to do whatever job you give them.
The shoulder and hip structure is very balanced to give maximum
performance to minimum effort. Pretty
heads connect to muscular crested necks set on well laid back shoulders which
allow free extension and handsome leg action.
Cobs have traditionally been famous for trotting ability, both ridden
and driven, being smooth and ground covering in their movement. We want people who get our gypsy ponies in the future to be able to describe them with these kinds of terms: Sweet expression – gorgeous markings and color – exquisite gaits – breath taking movement – drop dead gorgeous – rare gem – lovely trot – phenomenal canter – extension and suspension to die for – powerful lift off hocks – pleasure to ride/drive – pony with big horse action – free swinging movement – flowing gaits – versatile, brave and willing – talented and elegant. We plan for them to excel as sport ponies! |

In order to achieve
these ambitious goals, BoHo is building its breeding program with a selection
of outstanding mares including cross-bred and Welsh (because any breeding
program is nothing without an excellent foundation). Moreover, stallions
will always be selected that can produce babies that fit the above
descriptions. In this way, we feel confident
that as our foals make their way to you, BoHo is providing the best possible
gypsy pony to the best possible home. |
